Members of the AMVETS Department of D.C. donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to a variety of projects to benefit veterans and military initiatives. Events are held throughout the year focus on the importance of giving back to the community while bringing a sense of fellowship and accomplishment. Some of the many ongoing projects are listed below.

  • Volunteering for the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) programs, including:
    • donating and distributing personal hygiene kits (including combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, etc.) to both male and female hospitalized veterans in the D.C. VA Medical Center
    • participating in VAVS' “Because We Care Day," held on the first Wednesday of April each year
    • contributing money and volunteer hours to Winterhaven, an annual event to benefit homeless veterans in Washington, D.C.
  • Making an annual contribution to the D.C. VA Medical Center's dental clinic ($2,400 per year)
  • conducting community outreach projects, including:
    • organize an annual holiday party for residents of Greenleaf Senior Citizen Center in Washington, D.C.
    • award medals to outstanding ROTC students in approximately 5 major colleges in the metropolitan area
    • award medals to outstanding JROTC students in 15 Washington, D.C. high schools
    • sponsor one student each year to attend a youth leadership conference at Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pa.
    • provide funds to D.C. VA Medical Center's summer school program
