Department Commander

The Department commander, as the senior executive officer of the post, shall preside at all meetings of the post and executive committee but may delegate a vice commander to serve as a temporary substitute when needed. The commander is an ex officio member of all committees. The commander directs and supervises the activities of all elected and appointed officers and committees. Together with the adjutant and finance officer, the commander is responsible for all monies received by the post. He also has automatic access to the online data base. He may view a roster 24/7 and update the contact/address information for any post member. The Commander may add new members online and renew members online.

Department Commander Aaron J. Smith joined AMVET August 2004 and is a life member of D.C. Post 8. Aaron served one tours in Vietn

am and after being assigned for six years at the Pentagon he

retired from the United States Air Force Office of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, in July 1982. He is also a member of Disabled American Veterans, Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Combined Military Retiree’s Association of District of Columbia.

After retiring from the Air Force, Commander Smith was employed by Quality Systems Inc and BAE Systems for 17 years. Retiring again on July 5, 2005 he resides with his wife of over fifty years, Theresa A. Smith. They have two daughters, eight grand children and five great grandchildren.
